Q64. No, sirree.
What connects actors Mel Gibson, John Wayne, Harrison Ford and Iggy Pop?
A. Americans who evaded/avoided military action.
E. The war ended when Gibson was sixteen, but his family had emigrated to Australia mainly to ensure that none of the children had to serve. Iggy failed the medical by pretending he was gay. I would've thought that Harrison Ford was a few months too old for Vietnam duty, but according to the Telegraph of 11/1/03, he "cobbled together a made-up religious thesis to petition against his being drafted." This site http://www.nndb.com/people/812/000022746/ tells it slightly differently.
No doubt many aue-ers mourned the death of a certain person during the year since the last SDC--we say "no doubt" because his death wasn't mentioned here. He's connected, in a way that *has* been mentioned in the group, with the following places: Layton, Florida; Cove, Oregon; Bladworth, Saskatchewan; Felchville, Vermont. Add another place to the list, with supporting evidence.
H. He died in Wales.
A. Any place that's 24 hours from Tulsa according to MapQuest or
one of its competitors.
E. The person is Gene Pitney. "Uncle" because of the Rolling Stones song "Now I've Got a Witness (Like Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene)", which refers to Phil Spector and Pitney.
Jerry
Q67. Or Kylie?
What is the next word in this series? Aurochs, building, camel, __. Please explain.
H. The next word could be "door" or "dace". Now what's the word after that? Please explain. (The answer is then some word starting with "e" and related to praying, calling, or jubilation--maybe "evensong", "entreaty", or "exultation".)
A. Door, or any fish name beginning with "d", such as dace.
E. The letter "a" comes from a Semitic pictogram for an ox head, "b" for a house, "c" for a camel (or a throwing stick), "d" for either a door or a fish. Title: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomerang#Related_terms

Q68. Long live, or live long
Solve this cryptic crossword clue: Do we hear merrymaking burn the French boundary? (7, 2)
A. Charles IX.
E. Prosper Merimee wrote about Charles IX, so the latter is a Merimee king. Burn = char, the (French) = le, boundary = six. "Long live" for the king, "live long" for Prosper.
